You look in the mirror months after you first set your fitness goals, and it seems that your efforts are going nowhere. If you are starting to feel hopeless that your diet goals are failing, perhaps you have been doing something wrong. These 5 “health” foods might be the culprit:

1. Low fat or fat-free foods

Having a sweet tooth? If you are health conscious or trying to lose weight, chances are you’ll go for low fat or fat-free foods.  In truth, most low-fat foods are not healthy. They contain high amounts of added sugar or salt to replace the fat in these products, so you’ll end up consuming more calories than you would want.

2. Protein bars

For physically active people, snack bars are convenient meal replacements as they provide high levels of protein needed to support the body during physically demanding activities. However, protein bars are not a healthy choice especially if you are trying to lose weight. Protein bars commonly contain high levels of saturated fat and lack the nutritional health benefits of a properly balanced meal. Choose natural protein source whenever possible.

3. Granola

Just because it contains healthy ingredients doesn’t mean it’s good for you. Granola is loaded with calories due to added oil and sugar. According to Livestrong.com, one cup of granola contains 598 calories, which comprises nearly 30 percent of the daily suggested intake of 2,000 calories.

4. Fruit juice

Fruit juice contains high concentration of sugar, making them a nutritionally inferior choice. They are devoid of natural fiber and does not make you feel full, making you more hungry. Opt for whole fruit.

5. Cold cereals

Cold cereals are convenient, inexpensive  and tasty too. They contain fiber and can provide the milk and whole grain required by the body. What’s not to like, right? If you are trying to lose weight, here’s what: SUGAR. Some cold cereals are sugar-filled. Opt for whole grain and less sweetened cereals.
